Mallard in The Story of an Hour Essay
What should we make of this combination of thoughts, where Mrs. Mallard says, "she had loved him – sometimes. Often she had not"? How can you love someone "sometimes" but not all the time? It seems like in a committed marriage, where the two people involved really love each other, that even when they're having problems or disagreeing that their love would still be there. After all, you don't stop loving your partner if she/he doesn't take out the trash or strands you with the in-laws – right? So, either Mr. Mallard was doing something really bad occasionally to Mrs. Mallard, which would make her stop loving him, or her love for him just wasn't that deep in the first place. Any love she had for him is here just blown out of the water in favor of the "self-assertion" she's only just realized. This feeling of who she is and who she can be is by far the "strongest" she's ever felt.

The Story Of An Hour Character Analysis
Chopin tackles complex issues involved in the interplay of female independence, love, and marriage through her brief but effective characterization of the supposedly widowed Louise Mallard in her last hour of life. After discovering that her husband has died in a train accident, Mrs. Mallard faces conflicting emotions of grief at her husband's death and exultation at the prospects for freedom in the remainder of her life. The latter emotion eventually takes precedence in her thoughts. As with many successful short stories, however, the story does not end peacefully at this point but instead creates a climactic twist. The reversal--the revelation that her husband did not die after all-- shatters Louise's vision of her new life and ironically creates a tragic ending out of what initially appeared to be a fortuitous turn of events. As a result, it is Mr. Mallard who is free of Mrs. Mallard, although we do not learn whether the same interplay of conflicting emotions occurs for him.
As the title puts it, “The Story of an Hour” is a story that happens in one hour. This story mostly revolves around one woman, Louis Mallard, who is used to develop many themes in the story. Some of the themes brought have a different interpretation from what is normally known in the usual circumstances. The themes of freedom and death have been projected quite in a way that gives a reader another understanding different from what is already known. Other themes that are evidently seen are time, freedom and confinement, marriage and emotional regression. The title of the story also shows how so many things can happen within a single hour ( and Nora 27). In normal circumstances, death brings sorrow, grief, seclusion, guilt, regrets, amongst other feeling depending on the course of death. In this story, death brings some of these feelings such as sorrow and grief. However, the story has proved that death can bring joy and independence. Kate Chopin uses death to symbolize joy and independence.

SparkNotes: The Story of an Hour: Character List
By the Enlightenment, pastoral artwork and paintings tended to depict centaurs more as frolicking, playful creatures--erasing earlier overtones of rape and evil, and by the late 19th-century, fantasy writers at the time of George MacDonald rehabilitated them, making them deuteragonists and tritagonists that heroes would encounter on their quests. Among the Inklings of the 1940s, C.S. Lewis in particular become fascinated with idealizing centaurs as noble creatures and developed them into a for spiritual and bodily perfection. Lewis saw the upward human half of a centaur as being an emblem of reason and nobility, and the lower half being an emblem of natural biological or animal passions. Thus, the centaur became his emblem for the healthy union of the material body and the intellectual/spiritual domains--an organism as God intended humans to be before the fall, or the perfect amalgamation of the chariot-driver, chariot, and horses in the allegory of the charioteer that Plato retells in Phaedrus.
