Shakespeare Essays and Resources
The Shakespeare we read today comes from of 1623 written by fellow actors John Heminge and Henry Condell to preserve Shakespeare's legacy. Amazingly, no original manuscripts survive reflecting the fact that many of these manuscripts were written purely for performance and were not regarded as pieces of literary work. There is also no general consensus on when all the plays were first performed. It might surprise readers to know that many of Shakespeare's plays, especially in the experimental period were hardly original, borrowing plot features from earlier plays. Likewise with his history plays, Shakespeare compresses events and does not follow history too closely to add to the drama. However borrowing plots and taking liberties with historical facts was not uncommon in Shakespeare's time and his skill for language, imagery, pun and his creative adaption of myth and history have set Shakespeare apart as arguably the greatest playwright of all time.
Although many records of Shakespeare's life as a citizen of Stratford have survived, including his marriage and birth certificates, very little information exists about his life as a young playwright. Legend characterizes Shakespeare as a roguish young man who was once forced to flee London under suspect circumstances, perhaps related to his love life, but the paltry amount of written information does not necessarily confirm this facet of his personality.

Shakespeare's accomplishments are apparent when studied against of this age. His company was the most successful in London in his day. He had plays published and sold in octavo editions, or "penny-copies" to the more literate of his audiences. Never before had a playwright enjoyed sufficient acclaim to see his works published and sold as popular literature in the midst of his career. In addition, Shakespeare's ownership share in both the theatrical company and itself made him as much an entrepeneur as artist. While Shakespeare might not be accounted wealthy by London standards, his success allowed him to purchase New House and retire in comfort to Stratford in 1611.
The first decade of the seventeenth century witnessed the debut performances of several of Shakespeare’s most celebrated works, including many of his so-called history plays: Othello in 1604 or 1605; in 1606 or 1607; and in 1608. The last of Shakespeare's plays to be performed during his lifetime was most likely King in either 1612 or 1613.

If the plot and characterization of Julius Caesar provide a strong mix of historical and tragic genres, the appearance of Caesar in acts 4-5 as a ghost, with a vengeful agenda, borrows from a third theatrical genre: the revenge-play. Unlike classical tragedy and historical drama, revenge-play is considered a "lower" form of art and a less dignified genre than tragedy or history. By combining elements of classical drama with elements of populist drama, Shakespeare was able to give Julius Caesar a unique quality which still endures to this day.

In that scene, the dialogue compresses the historical and classical elements into a single entity. The audience expects some kind of classical "Roman" epitaph to be spoken by Caesar as he dies and Shakespeare, in fact, has Caesar deliver his dying lines in Latin. Similarly, when Caesar reappears as a ghost, his words: "Thy evil spirit, Brutus" (Shakespeare 79) reveal a distinct change in the elevated diction of the death-scene.

In 1594, Shakespeare returned to the theater and became a charter member of the Lord Chamberlain's Men - a group of actors who changed their name to the King's Men when James I ascended the throne. By 1598, Shakespeare had been appointed the "principal comedian" for the troupe; by 1603, he was "principal tragedian." He remained associated with the organization until his death. Although acting and playwriting were not considered noble professions at the time, successful and prosperous actors were relatively well respected. Shakespeare’s success left him with a fair amount of money, which he invested in Stratford real estate. In 1597, he purchased the second largest house in Stratford - the New Place - for his parents. In 1596, Shakespeare applied for a coat of arms for his family, in effect making himself a gentleman. Consequently, his daughters made “good matches,” and married wealthy men.
