Although Carpenter describes each essay in the introduction, she fails to provide a trajectory or clear structure for the collection. What follows are sixteen essays, beginning with biographical material, then followed by literary analyses, discussions of theater and film adaptations, a narrower focus on The Secret Garden, and finally essays on the practical aspects of collecting Burnett's texts and about the Frances Hodgson Burnett Online Discussion Group. A filmography and index provide reference material at the end. Noted historian and biographer Gretchen Holbrook Gerzina frames the collection with her keynote address as the first essay and her interview with Penny Deupree, Burnett's great-granddaughter, as the conclusion. Gerzina's work allows readers to experience the 2003 conference and to join the community of Burnett scholars and fans committed to growing scholarship on this author.

The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd is a book discussing the internal strife of a young white girl, in a very racist 1960’s south.

In the Roman era, Aphrodite became Venus, to whom the rose was also sacred. It was also in Rome that the ancient expression, sub rosa, ‘under the rose,’ originated, referring to the ancient custom of hanging a rose over a council table to indicate that everything spoken was to remain secret. This custom may have derived from an ancient Egypt image of Horus, the divine son of Isis, called Harpocrates by the Greeks, sitting within a rose with his finger to his lips, ordaining silence about the mysteries.

Pagan flower festivals were soundly denounced when Christianity became the official religion of the Roman Empire. The Church Fathers regarded roses as damnable, because of their association with Venus, and even banned them from graveyards. The festivals continued in Germany for a while after, with the rose-garden (or rose grove) being identified with the mountain of Venusburg, and witches came to be called “visitors of the grove.”

This essay is on The Secret Garden

In many medieval paintings, Mary is pictured within a hortus conclusus, a walled garden filled with roses. The walled garden is womb-like, and Mary was sometimes regarded as the garden itself, the virginal matrix in which the Son of Light was conceived and brought to birth. She may be seated beneath a rose arbor or before a tapestry of roses, wreathed with a rose crown and holding a white rose. The rose takes the place of a Queen's scepter, suggesting that her power comes from divine love rather than worldly elevation. Love is the only key that can unlock the door to the garden and reveal the secret of the hidden rose.

Book Review On The Secret Garden English Literature Essay

The Rose Garden

The earliest gardens of the desert lands of the Middle East were designed to emulate Eden, with four streams flowing out to the four directions, and a Tree of Life in the center. From Persia came gardens laid out like mandalas, surrounded by four walls, suggestive of seclusion and completion, with a fountain of crystal water in the centre. Tree and fountain are both feminine symbols of the creative source of life that emerges mysteriously from the unseen world that lies behind our own, continually renewing and being renewed. In fact, our word ‘Paradise’ comes from the Persian word for a garden. The medieval rose-garden was purposefully laid out in this four-square design, making it a mirror of the original primal harmony of Eden, so that by the 12th century, the rose-garden had become the standard image of paradise.

Book Review On The Secret Garden English ..

Editor Angelica Shirley Carpenter describes the aim of the book as "offering new interpretations of Frances Hodgson Burnett's life and work" (xvi). With biographical, historical, and literary approaches, In the Garden achieves its aim and serves as an introduction not only to Burnett's life and children's texts but also to her novels for adults and their many adaptations. The collection's broad scope is, arguably, its greatest strength as well as its greatest weakness. Its strength is that it provides an introduction to Burnett: readers experience a breadth of scholarship and learn about (or are reminded of) the range of Burnett's own work: writing for children and adults, with romance and realism, in the United States and Great Britain, for pay and pleasure, with praise and criticism, and as a popular but understudied author. The weakness of this broad scope is that at times the collection presents something of a hodgepodge—a little of everything without sustained attention to any particular thread. The editor and contributing authors work against this potential weakness by identifying gaps in scholarship on Burnett and by proposing future areas of study.

Buckingham (b.1880), "Such a Beautiful World"

Something will have gone out of us as a people if we ever let the remaining wilderness be destroyed; if we permit the last virgin forests to be turned into comic books and plastic cigarette cases; if we drive the few remaining members of the wild species into zoos or to extinction; if we pollute the last clear air and dirty the last clean streams and push our paved roads through the last of the silence, so that never again will Americans be free in their own country from the noise, the exhausts, the stinks of human and automotive waste. ~Wallace Stegner, letter to David E.
