Thematic significance of symbols in “Of Mice and Men”

The novel by John Steinbeck, Of Mice and Men, is set in the times of the Great Depression.

CATCH: A lyric poem or song meant to be sung as a round, with the words arranged in each line so that the audience will hear a hidden (often humorous or ribald) message as the groups of singers sing their separate lyrics and space out the wording of the poem. For example, one might write a song in which the first line contained the words "up," the word "look" appears in the middle of the third line, the word "dress" appears in the second line, and the word "her" appears in the middle of the fourth line. When the song or poem is sung as a round by four groups of singers, the word order and timing is arranged so that the singers create the hidden phrase "look up her dress" as they sing, to the amusement of the audience as they listen to an otherwise innocent set of lyrics. Robert Herrick's "To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time" is an example of a catch, and when William Lawes adapted the poem to music for Milton's masque Comus, it became one of the most popular drinking songs of the 1600s (Damrosche 844-45).

Conversely, our times challenge those relationships. This is why we must reflect on friendship; so that it doesn’t slip away from us under the pressure of a dominant economic discourse. We are all, and always, creatures of our time. In the case of friendship, we must push back against that time if we are to sustain what, for many of us, are among the most important elements of our lives. It is those elements that allow us to sit by the bedside of a friend: not because we know it is worth it, but because the question of worth does not even arise.

It tells the story of two men, George Milton and Lennie Small.

This is also what George and Lennie feel like in the novel Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck....

How do the issues in this case echo those in the novella? Besides the obvious parallels, consider the roles of race and human responsibility. Do you think people with mental handicaps should face the death penalty? How do judges decide who should and who shouldn’t? Is what George does in the end, acting as jury, judge, and executioner, right?

In 2012, Marvin Wilson, a “mentally retarded man with an I.Q. of 61,” was executed in Texas for a fatal shooting, after appeals were denied by the Supreme Court. In , Robert Mackey referred to a 2004 ruling that established precedent for the execution. During it, a state court judge invoked “Of Mice and Men,” and Lennie specifically, in arguing that it would be impossible to define the point at which a mentally retarded person should not face execution for a crime.

There are many instances of this throughout Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck.

'Of Mice and Men' is written by John Steinbeck, published in 1937.

One of the themes of Of Mice and Men is that men fear loneliness, that they need someone to be with and to talk to who will offer understanding and companionship....

But how many have seen the 1992 film "Of Mice and Men".

For a more recent example, consider the disturbingly cheerful pop song by Foster the People, "Pumped Up Kicks," which deals with a school shooting. Here, the shooter/narrator thinks, "I've waited for a long time. Yeah, the sleight of my hand is now a quick-pull trigger. / I reason with my cigarette." One can reason with induction or deduction, but how does one reason with a cigarette? Here, the catachresis might evoke the idea of the "cool" kid using personal style instead of a persuasive argument, or it might evoke the imagery of torture--burning victims with a cigarette-butt to make one's point. This sort of evocative, almost nonsensical language is the heart of good catachresis. Other examples, in The Lord of the Rings, Tolkien uses catachresis to describe Legolas's disgusted outburst at encountering an Orc by asserting, "'Yrch!' siad Legolas, falling into his own tongue.'" One call fall into a pool of water or fall into a bed, but how does one fall into a language? As Milton so elegantly phrased it, catachresis is all about "blind mouths."

…Aristotle thought that there were three types of friendship: those of pleasure, those of usefulness, and true friendship. In friendships of pleasure, “it is not for their character that men love ready-witted people, but because they find them pleasant.” In the latter, “those who love each other for their utility do not love each other for themselves but in virtue of some good which they get from each other.” For him, the first is characteristic of the young, who are focused on momentary enjoyment, while the second is often the province of the old, who need assistance to cope with their frailty. What the rise of recent public rhetoric and practice has accomplished is to cast the first two in economic terms while forgetting about the third.
