And here is their list of the “TOP 10 FAIRY TALES WE NO LONGER READ”:

Of the 3,000 British parents polled by the , earlier this month, 50 percent said they would not read fairy tales to their children until they were at least five-years-old. Of those, 20 percent said they rejected the oldies as politically incorrect, while close to that number, 17 percent, said the stories would give their children nightmares.

Now it seems that old-fashioned fairytales have fallen out of favor, too.

In his Canterbury Tales, Chaucer masterfully links together himself as the author, himself as a character in the story, the other characters, and then finally the readers.

However, in these tales, Chaucer depicts both the pilgrims and their stories with striking realism.

I read my 2 year old modern stories like Goodnight Moon but plenty of classic fairytales too. I tell her that the wolf ate Red Riding Hood’s grandmother and that the woodsman had to cut her out of his stomach. I tell her that the last little pig cooked the wolf who climbed down the chimney and ate him. When we get to Cinderella I will tell her that the stepsisters cut off heel and toe in a vain attempt to make the shoe fit and that the slipper was filled with blood. I want her to love reading; the undiluted tales fire the imagination.

In 1812, the Grimm brothers Jacob and Wilhelm published Children’s and Household Tales which was a collection of German fairy tales. They would go onto publish two separate volumes, which would total 170 stories collectively

Throughout his life, Geoffrey Chaucer encountered every kind of person and brought them to life for us in "The Canterbury Tales," a collection of short stories written in the 1300's.

As long as parents are good examples in *real* life to their children, fairy tales are harmless and good fun. I would never think of depriving my children of classic literature because it is representative of an older, outdated social construct. Teach them that!

The Canterbury Tales are a collection of 120 stories that Chaucer began writing in 1386, and planned to complete during his lifetime.

Red Caps: New Fairy Tales for Out of the Ordinary Readers

Oh please, parents. Lighten up. Fairy tales are stories, meant for fun and entertainment. If your kids can’t handle Rapunzel because it’s too “dark,” there’s not a lot of hope for them.

Fairy tales too scary? Bwawaaha. I was raised on not only fairy tales, but the German classic Struwwelpeter, complete with color drawings of kids burning to death and having their thumbs (which shouldn’t be sucked) chopped off. Personally, I loved that book and some of my siblings did, too, enough that they got the book for their own kids. Of course, different kids have different reactions; one of my sisters was terrified of the book!

I’m young enough to be far from having children myself, but I still remember the moment I figured out how much I loved reading, and it was in the middle of The Three Little Pigs. I highly doubt I’d be where I am today (working for a major publishing house, spurred by my love for stories) if it weren’t for some of those gruesome fairy tales.

my daughter will ask me why there are so few mothers in fairy tales

When you say “where are the mothers” I think you are missing the point. In fairy tales the literal mother may be missing–she dies on the first page (Cinderella), or she just drops out of the story (Rapunzel)–but that’s just so the fairy tale can get about the business of depicting all of our mothers in their most wonderful or horrible aspects through the metaphor of the fairy god-mother or the wicked witch or the evil queen. These tend to be the strongest characters in fairy tale, and they’re all about mom.

Adult interaction is key. Parents can use the fairytales as a tool to face some of today’s challenges- even with older kids. They can use them to ask questions to stimulate thinking: Do you think it would make a difference if Cinderella was not so pretty? Do you think that is fair? The conversation could then move to the effects of the media on self-esteem… from there, an opportunity to remind your daughter of her own strengths and abilities which attribute to her beauty.

I think these two paragraphs offer some perspective. The fairytales are what they are due to the time in which they were published. Historically, views were much different than they are now.
