The Wife of Bath is one of these characters.
Through the narrator’s use of direct and indirect characterization, significant details, and motivations for actions I was able to analyze the distinct traits of “the worthy woman from beside Bath city.” The narrator was very successful in portraying the wife.
With that in mind, we decided to take a look and see how the Wife of Bath herself has been depicted by various men at various times (as well as obviously being the creation of a man from the start). Displayed here are three artists’ renderings. The first is a woodcut from the 1542 edition of Chaucer’s Workes; the second, en engraving by William Blake in 1810; and the third by Blake’s rival engraver Thomas Stothard from 1817. Each of them provides a different interpretation of the Wife of Bath, be it a typical (if somewhat austere-looking) woman of means from the medieval period, a bawdy drunken profligate, or a flirtatious high-brow lady. All of these images display an aspect of the Wife of Bath, but we would argue that none of them truly encapsulates her essence.
Certainly, the prologue of Wife of Bath is robust.
It tells a sort of autobiography of woman who is not only comfortable in her sexuality enough to talk about it, she is also comfortable enough ask the question: "Why not have sex for pleasure rather than just procreation?" The Wife of Bath is a woman before her time in the sense that she is confident in her ability to ask for and to get exactly what she wants from life.
Some critics have seen a disparity between this out-spoken, sometimes coarse, commonsensical discourse and the fairy tale which follows. Yet the two are united by the theme of what women want. She makes it clear that they desire "maistrie" or mastery in the sense of dominance over men. The Preamble is notable for: its oral signals of rhetoric (frequently misused); its revelations, some deliberate, many unintentional; its feminism; its humour; and the reactions of the other pilgrims who cannot all keep quiet. There is a pervading theme of the two conflicting types of authority, books - which she resents despite being more knowledgeable than she admits - and experience of life, which the Wife has in abundance. She is likeable despite her cynicism and rough dealings with her old, rich husbands and we are aware that she truly loved Janekin with his curly gold hair and shapely legs.
The Wife of Bath is a very interesting character....
The Wife of Bath is implying that the reason she has married so often is not only because she enjoys having rich husbands (found in lines prior) but also because she enjoys the "fruyt of mariage" (120), which would mean the act of sex.
Sometimes this is presented blatantly to the reader, such as the case of Janekin's reading aloud from "The Book of Wikked Wives" (The Wife of Bath's Prologue and Tale 691)....

An example that would not follow these views is the Wife of Bath.
Through the Wife of Bath, Chaucer investigates the difficulty of self-realization for a woman in this restrictive environment. The wife of bath, Alison, represents antifeminist stereotypes and searches for happiness and a place in a patriarchal society. Unfortunately, Alison is never in tune with who she really is as a woman. Chaucer uses a series of ironies to eventually show that under her seemingly confident guise,...
The Wife of Bath is not your ordinary housewife.
She strengthens her argument by asking the reader, and supposedly her listeners, "were members maad of generacion, and of so parfit wys a wright wroght?" (123) The Wife of Bath is referring to the purpose of the genitals.
The Wife of Bath's tale is funny.
Each person is represented to fit a unique type of behavior as shown by people during the medieval ages. My attention was drawn to the Wife of Bath through which Chaucer notes the gender inequalities. Predominantly, women could either choose to marry and become a childbearing wife or go into a religious order. Women were seen as property. Women during this period of time, had limited choices when it came to societal roles. The Wife of Bath exonerates the accepted roles of society, reflecting wo...

The essay addresses the transformation of Behn into a feminist icon by later writers, especially Bloomsbury Group member Virginia Woolf in her novella/essay .
The Wife of Bath: A Feminist Before Her Time ..
Some critics have claimed that Chaucer intended several of the tales to form a "marriage group" to create a discussion on marriage within the work as a whole: The Wife of Bath's, the Friar's, the Summoner's, the Clerk's, the Merchant's, the Squire's and the Franklin's but this does not seem to others a particularly fruitful way to consider such diverse material. In many ways the Preamble is a tale in itself: it is longer than her actual story and is the disjointed narrative of her life, mixed with reflections on whatever enters her head.
The Wife of Bath: Feminism in Chaucer Essays
Some critics love the Wife of Bath and her controversial prologue, proclaiming that she is a woman of strength and powerful words; others hate her and cover the eyes of younger girls, determined that Wife of Bath is instead a role model of what women should not be; and the rest remain a bit confused, simply excusing themselves and the Wife herself....
