Some names entered my mind, but do I really admire them.
Celebrities absolutely rule the world. Youths are bombarded with the wild thoughts of taking pictures alongside their famous celebrities and sports personality. Youths (who are quite an impressionable) hear stories of very wealthy business men who dropped out of college to pursue successful careers. Examples from all works of life include Kanye West, who attempts to mock the idea of college as incompetent. He creatively uses the names of his albums to play down the importance of college in our society.
But after standing over me and prying my hands off of every item that I encountered, my mom finally convinced me to haul all of my broken treasures to the Dump.
Then I realized who I really admire: Britney Spears....

Fathers are special because they bring out the fun side in you.
In exchange, though, students have a much greater interaction with the world around them. Rather than wrapping ourselves in a cocoon of fevered separateness, we are engaging with those outside the university setting. When the cost of summer classes forced me to work as a waitress, I got to know the people who still generally do not go to college: the dishwashers who didn’t graduate from high school; the line cooks who had children in their teens; the servers who are on parole till 2015. You can’t meet, and learn from, these people in a dorm lounge. In interning for a Pittsburgh non-profit dedicated to educating the city about energy conservation, I not only learned a lot about how poverty interacts with energy use, I contributed to progress in the struggles to conserve energy and to fight poverty. No one can say anti-war protests didn’t have a significant political impact in the Vietnam era, but activism these days finds its expression in cooperation with non-profits and, yes, corporations, and it does substantial good.
He then goes on to mock the old residents of Beijing, who still have the upper hand in the real estate market despite the flood of new immigrants, all owning “five-room houses.” The old Beijingers lead very different lives from the migrant workers, who are caught in a negative spiral of hard work, no social life, and finding a place to settle down.

When I walked out of Ohio Stadium as a new graduate, I admit I was clutching my degree like a life preserver. And I proudly display it where I know everyone will see it (on top of the television, as I feared it would wrinkle in the bathroom). Maybe it’s too soon since my own time as an undergrad to have completely made up my mind how I feel about that leather bound piece of paper. But I still encourage my younger sister to look into college, despite her teenage nonchalance. Though my time at the university was not what I expected, I received an excellent education that will remain with me for the rest of my life. I just hope that my sister will be able to avoid the pitfall of debt that so many of us graduates seem to find ourselves as we emerge into our new lives.

It’s not that college is less important than it was twenty or thirty years ago. College will always be a place where people are exposed to new experiences and discover what they want to do in life. But when college becomes about grades, test scores and just slogging through towards a piece of paper, it loses its original meaning. College should not be a debt factory, pushing undergrads through to a life of monthly statements for a massive loan. Despite my disappointment in my own undergraduate experience, I still feel that college is an important part of young adulthood that should be open to everyone. But the pressure put upon high schoolers, as early as their freshman year, must be stopped. People should choose to go to college, not be coerced. And it is essential that college remain accessible to those who choose to go, particularly in financial terms.

But since everyone is told they must go to college, it becomes easier to raise prices on everything associated with it. My generation’s desperation to attain their degree means that they will pay rapidly rising tuition, even at state schools which were created so that all could afford a college education. When colleges raise their selectivity and standards (often code for raising their tuition), they become the means to chain those who are told they need them. Students sign on for decades of debt for a degree that many couldn’t care less about.

In my own experience, I find that college today has become a business, and a highly profitable one at that. Beginning in high school, the average student pays to take the standardized tests required by admissions, if not classes and books to prepare. Then come the onslaught of application fees, entrance fees and tuition, which even at state schools continues to rise higher and higher. And finally, there is the price of books, which in and of itself smacks of racketeering. As a student, I was relieved when my textbooks were only $300 per quarter, and lucky when I was able to sell them back for a quarter of their original worth. Imagine my surprise when I went to the bookstore and was told that my books had no value. How could a book have no value?
