The Plot Escapes Me - The New York Times

Existence itself may be considered an abyss possessed of no meaning. I donot read this as a pessimistic statement. If it be true, then I can see in it nothing else but a declarationof autonomy for my imagination & will--& for the most beautiful act theycan conceive with which to bestow meaning upon existence.

Both Of Mice and Men and Lord of the Flies have the significance of threats to build plots....

A plot is a sequence of events: A happens, then B happens, then C happens. (In more complicated forms, the sequence of events might fork like a book, but the principle remains the same.)

For example, a plot might look like this: “Pursuing the villains who escaped during last week’s session, the PCs will get on a ship bound for the port city of Tharsis. On their voyage they will spot a derelict. They will board the derelict and discover that one of the villains has transformed into a monster and killed the entire crew… except for one lone survivor. They will fight the monster and rescue the survivor. While they’re fighting the monster, the derelict will have floated into the territorial waters of Tharsis. They will be intercepted by a fleet of Tharsian ships. Once their tale is told, they will be greeted in Tharsis as heroes for their daring rescue of the derelict. Following a clue given by the survivor of the derelict, they will climb Mt. Tharsis and reach the Temple of Olympus. They can then wander around the temple asking questions. This will accomplish nothing, but when they reach the central sanctuary of the temple the villains will attempt to assassinate them. The assassination attempt goes awry, and the magical idol at the center of the temple is destroyed. Unfortuntely, this idol is the only thing holding the temple to the side of the mountain — without it the entire temple begins sliding down the mountain as the battle continues to rage between the PCs and villains!”

This is where situation-based prep usually gets maligned for requiring more work: People think they need to try to prepare themselves for every conceivable action the PCs might take. But, in point of fact, that’s not situation-based prep. That’s plot-based prep juiced up on Choose Your Own Adventure steroids. It’s the type of prep you would need to do if you were programming a computer game.

In this essay, I will discuss the ..

Classical 19th century anarchism defined itself in the struggle againstcrown & church, & therefore on the waking level it considered itself egalitarian& atheist. This rhetoric however obscures what really happens: the "king"becomes the "anarchist," the "priest" a "heretic." In this strange duetof mutability the politician, the democrat, the socialist, the rationalideologue can find no place; they are deaf to the music & lack all senseof rhythm. Terrorist & monarch are archetypes; these others are mere functionaries.

If art has died, or the audience has withered away, then we find ourselvesfree of two dead weights. Potentially, everyone is now some kind of artist--&potentially every audience has regained its innocence, its ability to become the art that it experiences.

From this alchemy we quintessentialize an aesthetic theory. Chaote art mayact terrifying, it may even act , but it can never allow itself to be drenched in putrid negativity, thanatosis, (delight in the misery of others), crooning over Nazi memorabilia & serialmurders. Ontological Anarchy collects no snuff films & is bored to tearswith dominatrices who spout french philosophy. ("Everything is hopeless& I knew it before you did, asshole. Nyahh!")

come to think of it the Kallikaks might well have produced secret Chaotes, precursor sex radicals, Zerowork prophets. Like other monotone landscapes(desert, sea, swamp), the Barrens seem infused with erotic power--not vrilor orgone so much as a languid disorder, almost a sluttishness of Nature,as if the very ground & water were formed of sexual flesh, membranes, spongyerectile tissue. We want to squat there, maybe an abandoned hunting/fishinglodge with old woodstove & privy--or decaying Vacation Cabins on some disusedCounty Highway--or just a woodlot where we park 2 or 3 Airstreams hiddenback in the pines near creek or swimming hole. The Escape Essay -- Creative Writing Examples

I accept this as a fair criticism. I'd make two rejoinders nevertheless;first, revolution has never yet resulted in achieving this dream. The vision comes to lifein the moment of uprising--but as soon as "the Revolution" triumphs andthe State returns, the dream and the ideal are already betrayed. I have not given up hope or even expectation of change--but Idistrust the word Revolution. Second, even if we replace the revolutionary approach with a concept of insurrection blossoming spontaneously into anarchist culture, our own particular historical situation is not propitious for such a vastundertaking. Absolutely nothing but a futile martyrdom could possibly resultnow from a head- on collision with the terminal State, the megacorporateinformation State, the empire of Spectacle and Simulation. Its guns areall pointed at us, while our meager weaponry finds nothing to aim at buta hysteresis, a rigid vacuity, a Spook capable of smothering every sparkin an ectoplasm of information, a society of capitulation ruled by the imageof the Cop and the absorbant eye of the TV screen.
