Description: Dr. Gulliver's travels among the Lilliputians, the Brobdingnagians, the Houynhynms, and others, are vividly portrayed in this made for television adaptation of the classic novel by Jonathan Swift. Written in the tradition of the "traveler's tale," the story shows the progressive disillusion of an individual seeking to understand whether man's corruption is innate or learned.

“Gulliver’s Travels by Jonathan Swift is a story about _________.

Issues of personal identity are apparent in Gulliver’s Travels, by Jonathan Swift....

Other social issues brought about by the book include culture clash that Gulliver experiences when he travels to other countries. The difference between his way of life and that of the people he encounters is evident in the differences in institutions and customs practiced. He is disappointed when foreigners find flaws in British customs and institutions which he hoped would impress these people. Custom and tradition are represented satirically by the manner in which Gulliver reports absurdities such as the Lilliputians burying their dead head first in preparation for the afterlife even though such traditions are practiced even without belief of the same. Swift also uses parody to criticize scientists in his time such as those of Balnibarbi who are not practical and thus ridiculous. This is a critical analysis of the use of science for its own sake, stating that this is not a valid use of the same.

However, the film offers more than this—it is also an exploration of Swift’s personal beliefs and life experiences, which color nearly every scene of Gulliver’s Travels.

Gulliver’s Travels is an adventure novel which can be a construed as an intellectual satire depicting the political and economical situation at the time the book was written. During the early eighteenth century, England was experiencing a lot of political changes culminating in the ascent of King George in 1714. This was with the assistance of the Whig party whose ministers later used their gains in power to tyrannize the opposing Tory party for which Swift was a member (Venturo, 1726). The book thus deals with the historical and political aspects on one hand while at the same time forming philosophical and abstract aspects on the other hand.
