Diversity Medical School Class Essay
By the 1920s the Bureau of Indian Affairs had changed its opinion about boarding schools, responding to complaints that the schools were too expensive and that they encouraged dependency more than self-sufficiency. By 1923, the majority of Indian children nationwide attended public schools. A report on Indian education issued in 1928 revealed glaring deficiencies in the boarding schools, including poor diet, overcrowding, below-standard medical service, excessive labor by the students and substandard teaching. The 1930s witnessed many changes in federal Indian policy, among which was a shift in educational philosophy. Classroom lessons could now reflect the diversity of Indian cultures. States assumed more control over Indian education as more children enrolled in public schools. Most of the boarding schools were closed by this time, Tulalip in 1932 and Cushman in 1920, leaving Chemawa as the sole government boarding school remaining in the Pacific Northwest.
I am attempting to write an essay for medical school on diversity, but I have quite the opposite problem from most people. My background is so diverse that I am uncertain how to structure my essay or what to include:

I pursued my under graduation down south of the Indian subcontinent, far from my hometown. Though I felt alienated in the beginning, the same helped me develop my Inter and Intrapersonal skills. I had the opportunity to coordinate with diverse individuals who represented various cultural backgrounds and possessed a unique personality. Being extroverted and straightforward, I found it easy to communicate and draw the best out of my peers. I enthusiastically engaged in constructive activities and discussions that simulated social benefiting ideas. During my MS in Industrial and Systems Engineering, I wish to indulge myself in knowledge and personality building exercises, all the while plotting new and better ideas to make education every child’s right and also ensure the same is provided, thus help in building a society whose future thrives on the knowledge of the progeny.
Again, I am imagining my reading audience, and I can almost see my readers’ eyes roll. So you’re a little weird, kid. How does that contribute to campus diversity? Well, I think I contribute plenty. Diversity goes beyond the physical; race or ethnicity might be the first things one thinks of, but really, it is a question of what makes someone the person that he or she is. Diversity might be considered in terms of economic or geographical background, life experiences, religion, sexual orientation, and even personal interests and general outlook. In this respect, my Goth identity contributes a perspective that is far different from the mainstream. Being Goth isn’t just about physical appearance; it’s a way of life that includes not only individual tastes in music, literature, and popular culture, but also particular beliefs about philosophy, spirituality, and a range of other human issues.
The Medical School Diversity Essay: Everything You …
In an effort to broaden the holistic review of medical school applicants, beginning with the 2018 cycle RWJMS has adopted the CASPer test as a required assessment tool for the pre-interview screening phase of the admissions process. This innovative tool will allow the admissions committee to better identify personal attributes of candidates, such as ethics, empathy, cultural sensitivity, collaboration, resiliency and adaptability. All applicants who receive a secondary application are required to complete the CASPer test. You may register for the CASPer test and select our school as one receiving scores prior to receiving our welcome letter and secondary instructions. For more information on the CASPer test .
In the Pacific Northwest, treaties negotiated with the Indians during the 1850s included promises of educational support for the tribes. For example, signed by members of the Nisqually, Squaxin, Puyallup and Steilacoom Tribes on December 26, 1854 called for the establishment of an agricultural and industrial school "to be free to the children of said tribes for a period of 20 years." The expenses of the school, its employees and medical personnel were to be defrayed by the federal government and not deducted from annuities. A similar clause appears in the Treaty of Point Elliott, signed by representatives of tribes living in the central and northern Puget Sound region.

I am attempting to write an essay for medical school on diversity…
My name is Victoria. I was just recently admitted to the University of Mississippi, and am currently filling out my scholarship resume. They have a diversity question, which is optional but I still want to fill it out, and I am uncertain how to approach it. The prompt is: “A diverse student body enhances the overall classroom experience for all students. A mix of academic interests, personal perspectives, and life experiences adds value to our University. Given your personal background, describe what you would bring to the diversity of our campus OR describe an encounter that demonstrated the importance of diversity to you. (Please note that your essay must be between 500 and 700 words. Your essay will be evaluated on a combination of style, grammar, imagination, and substance).”
I was born in Las Vegas, NV, and have traveled across the United States 4 consecutive times since the 4th grade, excluding the visits I have made to Hawaii, Germany, and France. I am currently in my senior year, and I am going to be majoring in Biochemical Engineering. I am unsure whether to approach it through my experience with diversity (let alone how to approach this specifically), or if I should describe how I would bring diversity to the University. What are your thoughts?

I am completing a college program essay asking about how I define diversity, what diversity means to me, and how I will contribute to a diverse college community. I started the essay about how my experience growing up at a non-diverse private school was a huge transformation for me as I attended a public high school. How do you advise I go about answering how I define diversity? Should i bluntly say “I define diversity as…” or weave it through my story?
Sample Medical School Admissions Essays - Erratic Impact
When I sat down to write this essay, I tried, as my high school English teacher always instructed, to imagine the audience for my writing. The more I thought about it, the more I pitied the college admissions screeners who would be reading a thousand essays on diversity. Along with the expected takes on race and ethnicity, how many of those essays would present their authors as outcasts, loners, kids who didn’t fit in at his or her school? How could I present myself as someone unique and interesting—strange, even—without falling prey to the cliché of the self-pitying social misfit?
