Building Feminist Theory Essays From Quest - …

Contemporary feminist thought spans a nearly infinite range ofpolitical and social orientations. Members are extreme right, extremeleft, wives, mothers, working class, upper-class, and even men. Whilesuch membership offers diversity within the ranks of the movement, such a wide strata of beliefs has made it difficult for the movementto consolidate its goals. Perhaps feminism can best be summarized as:"a mode of analysis, a method of approaching life and politics, rather than a set of political conclusions about the oppression ofwomen' (Building Feminist Theory 35).

Volume V number 1: : Barbara Smith and the Black Feminist Collective article, 1976-1977

Many of these women had been involved with , a feminist lesbian newspaper published from 1972 to 1973, or with the Women's Center or Rape Crisis Center; all shared a history of political activism and a sense of the importance of lesbian feminism, class, and power to feminist ideology.

Feminist theater has emerged as a direct result of the feministmovement. Too often theater that is specifically feminist in itsintent is categorized as being exclusively by and for women. Thislabel is superficial and rooted in the stereotypical misconceptionsplaced upon the feminist movement. Furthermore, feminist theater isgenerally defined within the broader context of women's theater, eventhough feminist performing companies are often concerned with issuesthat are more political and social in nature. Women's theater alsodeals with such issues, but their goal is geared more towardsentertainment rather than social change. Feminist theater historianMeredith Flynn states: "feminist theater needs to be examined withinits own political context so that its innovations and contributionsto the development of theater may be better understood andappreciated" (5). At the Foot of the Mountain provides an excellentexample. However, before the difficulties facing feminist theaterorganizations such as At the Foot of the Mountain can be fullyexamined, it is important to define more specifically what separatesfeminist theater from the women's movement.

To be included in this bibliography a citation had to 1) reflect or discuss a feminist approach; 2) pertain to literary criticism; and 3) relate to theory. Subdivisions include "Bibliographies," "Introductory Sources," "General," "Black Critical Theory," "Écriture Féminine," "Lesbian Theory," "Marxist Theory," "Mythic Theory," "Other Poststructural Theories," and "Psychoanalytic or Linguistic Theory." Classifying the citations was difficult because of overlapping concepts, and the subject headings are not rigid divisions but an attempt to impose a degree of order on the 247 books and articles (no dissertations are included). For example, discussions of écriture féminine and lesbian theory relate to psychoanalytic theory, and most feminist theory as a whole can be described as poststructural, but each of these is a separate category in the bibliography.

There are two types of audience participation in Ritual Drama. Thefirst is psychological. The vulnerability of the actors creates anatmosphere where the audience is able to drop their own defenses andemotionally participate in the drama. The second is a literalparticipation. Such methods as meditation, litanies, personalaccounts from the audience, and the breaking of bread allow theaudience to become part of the production and provides them with asense of community (Flynn 187, 19l). According to Boesing, the endresult of Ritual Drama is the healing of the audience. As thespectators confront their deepest emotions and fears, they are ableto let go of them. A catharsis, a cleansing has occurred (Flynn 192).Company collaboration is the method by which At the Foot of theMountain often creates theater directly from the values andexperiences of company members (Flynn 68). Such collaborativetechniques have their roots in the feminist practice of operatingwithout a hierarchy (Flynn 239). However, such communal handling ofpower has the potential for lowering the artistic quality of aproduction. At the Foot of the Mountain has found methods toalleviate this problem.

Feminist artist Myrna Lamb "...sees no single correct way topresent women in drama, but she feels that reaching a final awarenessis mandatory for a protagonist in a feminist play" (Leavitt 13)Henrik Ibsen's , one of the first plays toexhibit feminist characteristics, provides a perfect example. At theend of the play, Nora decides to leave her husband and children andmake a life of her own. She comes to the realization that the loss ofher own self-worth is not an acceptable price to pay if she is toremain with Torvald. Nora's slamming of the door as she leaves was ashock that was "heard around the world." To an audience in 1879, suchfeminist action was almost incomprehensible and consequently the playwas banned in most countries--surprising, because Nora was theproduct of a male mind. Interestingly enough, Nora's decision isstill shocking to modern audiences despite the increased awareness ofthe female experience.
