Beowulf, the main character, is an ideal king and archetypal warrior.

Then Beowulf's gloryeager they echoed, and all averredthat from sea to sea, or south or north, there was no other in earth's domain, under vault of heaven, more valiant found,of warriors none more worthy to rule!

Beowulf is everything a should be, but contains a few that a hero should not posses.

Whiles the hero his harp bestirred,wood-of-delight; now lays he chantedof sooth and sadness, or said arightlegends of wonder, the wide-hearted king;or for years of his youth he would yearn at times, for strength of old struggles, now stricken with age, hoary hero: his heart surged fullwhen, wise with winters, he wailed their flight.

Beowulf shows physical strength in the story by defeating Grendel.

When Beowulf sailed with his men to Herot he had one goal, to rid the hall of Grendal.

Beowulf makes his battle with Grendel more than a simple slay-the-monster task. By announcing that it will be a hand-to-hand combat, he gains extra glory for himself and the Geatish king, Hygelac, turning the contest into a feat of strength as well as a fight against evil.

Beowulf, Ecgtheow's son, replied:
"Well, friend Unferth, you have had your say
about Breca and me. But it was mostly beer
that was doing the talking. The truth is this:
when the going was heavy in those high waves,
I was the strongest swimmer of all." (529-534)

However this term does not do Beowulf justice.

Why is Beowulf considered a hero.

Beowulf scores one off of Unferth: Unferth can talk smack about Beowulf's past deeds, but the truth is that Unferth himself doesn't have any great deeds to boast about. Beowulf suggests that Unferth shouldn't go around insulting other warriors' courage until he's done something courageous himself. After all, Unferth never got the better of Grendel, so why should he sneer at Beowulf for trying?

In addition to Beowulf’s heroic qualities, he is very strong....

“…cut it through, broke bones and all.” His strength is also told in line 213 of how he “lifted the sword that was so massive that no ordinary man could lift.” Beowulf’s determination, or his will to win, was throughout the story, even up until his death.

The hero, Beowulf, is also given strength equivalent to thirty men.

The Courage, Strength, and Integrity of Beowulf :: Epic …

Beowulf is not an actual picture of historic Denmark, Geatland, or Sweden around 500 A.D., yet it is on a general view, a self-consistent picture, a construction bearing clearly the marks of design and thought.

Summary: Essay analyzes the strength of Beowulf

Beowulf makes an interesting claim early in the poem during his description of his swimming contest with Breca. At other points, the narrator reminds us that God determines everyone's fate. But in this passage, Beowulf claims that, if your fate hasn't been decided yet, you can succeed through sheer nerve and courageous behavior. It will be interesting to see if this attitude works out for him at the end of the poem.
