Beauty Pageant Introduction Quotes - Search Quotes

Perhaps one of the saddest aspectsis the concept of beauty that pageants preach, and that young girls grow upbelieving: beauty is fake fingernails, wigs and hairspray-frozen curls, tanfrom a can, un-authentic smiles. Beauty is not a kind heart but perfected posesand well-timed winks, not a giving of goodness but the getting of crowns. Beautycomes in but one kind and is unequally shared among people. Beauty isartificial and assumed; beauty does not come from within but from products. Andbeauty is not felt but seen, beauty is not marveled at but measured, anassessment delivered from the mouths of others.

Writing a Pageant Platform Essay : Beauty Pageant …

Also concerning is the fact that"instead of celebrating individuality, pageants encourage girls to change theirlooks to fit narrow, invented standards of beauty" (O'Neill). Moms and makeup artiststake drastic measures in preparing pageant girls, subjecting them to spraytans, waxes, teeth bleaching, fake fingernails, and layers of heavy makeup."Flippers," partial dentures, are worn if a girl has lost a tooth- thehallmarks of youth and every last imperfection are concealed in favor of anadult-like appearance (O'Neill). These cosmetic procedures often reducetoddlers to tears and tantrums, but are necessary for them to be contenders forthe crown. After hours of primping, these girls look much older than theyactually are and more doll-like than human. Rather than being recognized fortheir uniqueness and special differences, girls are forced to match a certainimagined, unnatural idea of beauty.

Pageants often contribute topsychological problems that may manifest as disorders later in life, andparticipants grow up in an atmosphere in which they learn superficial, damagingvalues. The pressures of competition, tensions between contestants, and beingsubjected to judgment can have many emotional repercussions, and have even ledto the labeling of pageants as child abuse. South Australia's Status of WomenMinister Gail Gago declared that "young children should not be exposed tothe risks and pressures associated with [pageants],'' and research has revealedthese risks to be very real (). Self-esteem issues, feelings of inferiority, paranoia, dissimulation, and anxiety can develop in these girls, who are caught between two undesirableextremes (Grosaru). The habitual pageant loser may suffer self-doubt andconfidence issues, whereas the continual winner may become a vain prima donna. Stemmingfrom these psychological issues, full-fledged disorders may arise down theroad. Low self-esteem and a physically-based conception of beauty make theperfect recipe for eating disorders such as bulimia and anorexia, as well asdepression (Reed).

Beauty pageants are all about displaying the best aspects of yourself

Americans have been captivated bythe recent television show, , but it is a mixture of disgust and disbelief, not admiration, thathas kept it in the attention of many viewers. The show hinges on the shockvalue of extreme 'pageanting' and pushy parenting, and the suspense as anxioustoddlers line up for the announcement of awards. Behind those coveted crowns aretears and yielding youth, mothers disregarding daughters, and hours after hoursbetter spent on healthier, happier endeavors. This world of glitz and glamouris built around a sadly superficial, limited concept of beauty, and ultimately enforcesinternal ugliness. In fact, the whole founding basis of pageants is that peopleare measurably better than each other, and that looks triumph over all otherqualities in importance. For all of the fame, winnings, and titles, nothing canjustify the hurts inflicted on these young girls, and the pageant system is inserious need of restructuring. Research has linked children's pageants todisorders, tragedies have unfolded as a result of participant publicity, and evidenceenough exists in the damaged values and relationships of these tinycompetitors. Young girls' beauty pageants are detrimental to participants'psychological health, harm family relations and disrupt the natural course ofchildhood, and encourage a demeaning view of women.

In addition to a poor set ofvalues, pageants also cultivate dependency. Decisions are frequently made forthese girls because they are so young- including the decision to even competein pageants. Sadly, often mothers get very pushy and live vicariously throughtheir daughters. The mother of baby SamiJo on claims that SamiJo's dream is to be MissAmerica, even though the little girl can barely mumble single words. She also outrightadmits multiple times that pageants were the reason she wanted to have adaughter (Youtube). In this instance and in many others, girls are born intopageants without a choice. As they grow older, they learn to be passive and to submit,to put on costumes that have been picked out for them, to learn routinescreated for them, to sit there while makeup is applied. This learned dependencyextends past decisions, as they learn to depend on others' opinions to measuretheir own self-worth. They are vulnerable to the choice of pageant judges andin a desperate position where their beauty is someone else's to evaluate.

argumentative essay on beauty pageants

There has been a backlash ofarguments in favor of children's pageants, mainly by pageant moms and officialsinvolved with the competitions, but many are ill-founded and easilydiscredited. A common claim is that pageantparticipants can win money and scholarships, which is indeed true. However, this is not a logical incentive, because the cost of competing often equals oroutweighs the value of the potential winnings. Others attest that pageantsbuild confidence and public speaking skills, but children's pageants involvevery little speaking and can confidence if a girl does not win. In fact, they may cultivate a sense ofself-doubt and a dependency on the approval of others. Any confidence gainedwill be based on external qualities, and true self-confidence comes from theinside. Forming new friendships is another pro-pageant argument, yet frequentlythese are 'false' friendships tainted by competition, comparison, and gossip, especially on the part of the mothers (). Lastly, parents liken pageants to sports due to thetraining and commitment that they entail. This is a flawed analogy because"beauty is not a talent or skill than can be enhanced with practice/determination/stamina"(). Children are subjectto the whims of the judges, and the deciding factors in this type ofcompetition are potentially hurtful, being incredibly personal. In sports likeswimming or soccer, winning means having the fastest time or playing to thebest of your ability, and athletes can improve themselves through conditioningand practice. In pageants it comes down to judgments of the very person- face, body, personality. Titles include "Most Beautiful," "Best Personality," "PrettiestEyes," and others (Tydd). Losing can be devastating because these are integralaspects of someone rather than an improvable talent.
