Essays (Francis Bacon) - Wikipedia

Francis Bacon was born on 22 January 1561 in London. He was the son of Sir Nicholas Bacon, keeper of the great seal for Elizabeth I. Bacon studied at Cambridge University and at Gray's Inn and became a member of parliament in 1584. However, he was unpopular with Elizabeth, and it was only on the accession of James I in 1603 that Bacon's career began to prosper. Knighted that year, he was appointed to a succession of posts culminating, like his father, with keeper of the great seal.

The protestant church back then was suffering from controversies and Sir Bacon’s work claimed that unity and progress in the stability of its churches will help develop the English empire. Religious beliefs at this time was heavily challenged and intrigued. On one hand, Bacon formulates that religion and system of beliefs is the bond that keeps society intact.

Commissioned by Tate, the brief for this 5,000-word catalogue essay for a major retrospective of the painter Francis Bacon was to expand Walsh’s research into the artist Nigel Henderson.
