Writing Tips: Active Voice and Passive Voice

No. At times passive voice is the better option. Passive voice is used when the outcome or result is more important than the person or thing who performed the action. Such as:

Physicists have examined the possibility of cold fusion for many years.

Voice simply means who’s performing the action. What most students don’t realise is that EVERY sentence you write (or speak) is in either active or passive voice. That’s right: EVERY. SINGLE. SENTENCE. And it’s for this reason that you need to be able to tell them apart.

Active voice is the secret you really want to know about, because if you don’t then you’re going to be left out of the loop in a big way.

It all comes down to “action” and who is performing it. In active voice the subject, which is at the front of the sentence, is performing the action. In passive voice the object, which is at the back of the sentence, is performing the action. In passive voice the action gets swapped around from the front of the sentence to the back.

Active voice gets the ding! ding! ding! in ranking—it’s top of the list. When it’s not used bells go off and the newsroom jumps to attention. Editors come running. So, what’s the big deal and why is it so important?

What a great post. Good examples and good advice. I'll have to be more aware of this. I may be mixing them... Thanks!

In the two examples above, the active voice is more direct, and therefore clearer and tighter while the passive voice weakens and draws out the sentence. The fewer words you can use to say the same thing, the tighter your writing will be. Depending on what is said, the passive voice even can make the author appear hesitant or uncertain of what they are writing about. On the other hand, the active voice is stronger, letting you know who is doing the action. It does not allow the reader to misinterpret what is happening so it is clearer.

However, there may be times when it is totally appropriate to use the passive voice in your writing and is actually the best way to say what you want to say. For example, most scientific or technical writing uses passive voice because it takes out the "self" from the work. (I mixed the two solutions together vs. The two solutions were mixed together). Since technical writing needs to be opinion free, the passive voice gives the option to the writer to write without attributing the actions to themselves.

But remember, using the passive voice gives up responsibility of the action taken, which can be a cop-out as a writer.

We all know that a sentence has a subject and a verb and usually an object. With verbs, there are two forms or voices- active and passive. When the verb is in active voice, the subject is doing the action and the object receives the action of the verb. When the verb is in the passive voice, something is being done to the subject so the subject receives the action of the verb rather than the object.
