Donald Davidson was one of the most important philosophers of thelatter half of the twentieth century and with a reception andinfluence that, of American philosophers, is perhaps matched only bythat of W. V. O. Quine. Davidson's ideas, presented in a series ofessays (and one posthumous monograph) from the 1960s onwards, have hadan impact in a range of areas from semantic theory through toepistemology and ethics. His work exhibits a breadth of approach, aswell as a unitary and systematic character, that is unusual withintwentieth century analytic philosophy. Thus, although he acknowledgedan important debt to Quine, Davidson's thought amalgamates influences(though these are not always explicit) from a variety of sources, including Quine, C. I. Lewis, Frank Ramsey, Immanuel Kant and thelater Wittgenstein. And while often developed separately, Davidson'sideas nevertheless combine in such a way as to provide a singleintegrated approach to the problems of knowledge, action, language andmind. The breadth and unity of his thought, in combination with thesometimes-terse character of his prose, means that Davidson is not aneasy writer to approach. Given the demanding nature of his work, it isperhaps only to be expected that it would receive a range ofinterpretations and assessments, and this is especially true of muchof the engagement with Davidson's thought that has developed in recentyears. In a number of publications, Ernest Lepore and Kirk Ludwig, inparticular, have advanced a critical interpretation of Davidson'sphilosophy that focuses on his earlier work, especially hiscontributions to the theory of meaning and philosophy of action, butthat is largely negative in its assessment of the cogency ofDavidson's arguments, and the philosophical viability of the positionshe advances (see, for instance, Lepore and Ludwig 2005). At the sametime, the re-publication of Davidson's later essays has disseminatedthem to a wider, and often newly-appreciative, audience, while thework, not only of Richard Rorty, but also of Robert Brandom, and, tosome extent, John McDowell, is suggestive of a broader and morepositive engagement with Davidson's thinking. In addition, Davidson'swork has also been an important, if sometimes contentious, point offocus for philosophical interaction between analytic and so-called‘continental’ thought (particularly in relation tohermeneutic and literary theory — see, for instance, Malpas1992, and Dasenbrock 1993). Regardless of divergence ininterpretation, then, Davidson's work still attracts considerablephilosophical attention, and seems likely to have a continuinginfluence and significance.

The development of Davidson’s ideas provides an overview of the larger tapestry of 20th century analytic philosophy, with the two main springs being an interest in the nature of human agency and the nature of language. Though initially separate, these projects became intertwined in a way characteristic of much of Davidson’s philosophy. He was a synoptic and original thinker who dealt with large themes, though this is easily obscured by his concentration on the essay form and his compressed styles of thought and writing.
Whether or not his philosophical outlook is ultimately judged to be successful, his development of a consolidated response to the largest problems of the philosophical tradition — of mind, world and self — together with the way in which he brought into his work so many different strands of influence and combined them, is an enormously impressive achievement. The strands of his own legacy have been multifarious, and are still developing. It is too early to tell what Davidson’s place in the history of philosophy will be, but it is hard to imagine what the landscape of contemporary philosophy would have been like without him.
Donald Herbert Davidson was born on March 6th, 1917, in Springfield,Massachusetts, USA. He died suddenly, as a consequence of cardiacarrest following knee surgery, on Aug. 30, 2003, in Berkeley,California. Remaining both physically and philosophically active upuntil his death, Davidson left behind a number of important andunfinished projects including a major book on the nature ofpredication. The latter volume was published posthumously (seeDavidson 2005b), together with two additional volumes of collectedessays (Davidson 2004, 2005a), under the guidance of Marcia Cavell.
